A complete, verified list of GS1 Application Identifiers (AIs) for GS1 Digital Link QR codes and GS1-128 barcodes, organized by category with formats, decimal rules, and encoding examples.
TL;DR
A GS1 Application Identifier (AI) is a 2 to 4 digit numeric prefix that tells a scanner exactly what the data after it means, such as a batch number, expiration date, or net weight.
AIs are what let a single GS1 Digital Link QR code carry a GTIN, batch, serial number, and expiry date all in one scan, readable by both retail checkout scanners and consumer phones.
This list is cross-checked against GS1’s official numeric AI register and the GS1 Digital Link URI Syntax standard, not just copied from a single source (a common source of errors in AI lists you’ll find online).
Every AI here includes its format code, maximum data length, and a worked encoding example so you can build a Digital Link URI without guessing.
Getting an AI wrong on printed packaging is expensive: it cannot be edited after the barcode is printed, so double-check every value against this list before you send anything to print.
Sunrise 2027 is the deadline for major retailers to accept 2D barcodes at checkout, and it’s built entirely on correct AI usage inside GS1 Digital Link. Read our GS1 Sunrise 2027 packaging guide for the full compliance picture.
Static QR codes can’t be corrected after printing. If any AI value needs to change later, you need a dynamic QR code instead, which lets you update the destination without reprinting.
A GS1 Application Identifier is a numeric prefix, 2 to 4 digits long, placed in front of a data value inside a barcode or QR code. It tells the scanning system exactly what that value represents before it even reads it. Without an AI, a barcode is just a string of digits with no meaning attached. With it, a scanner instantly knows whether it’s looking at a batch number, a best-before date, or a net weight in kilograms.
AIs are the backbone of every GS1-128 barcode and every GS1 Digital Link QR code. In a Digital Link URI, AIs appear as path segments or query parameters after the core identifier (usually a GTIN), for example: https://brand.com/01/09506000134352?10=BATCH123&17=261231. Here, 10 is the AI for batch/lot number and 17 is the AI for expiration date.
Why accuracy matters: Once a GS1 Digital Link QR code is printed on packaging, the encoded AIs cannot be corrected. If AI 15 (best before date) is mistakenly used where AI 17 (expiration date) belongs, that error ships with every unit until the print run is gone. Always verify the AI against an authoritative source, not just the first list that shows up in search.

Important: Date AIs only accept numeric data in YYMMDD format (or longer for time-inclusive AIs). If only year and month apply, pad the day with two zeros.
Example: Best before date 31 Dec 2026 = AI 15: 261231
Example: Harvest range 22 June to 1 July 2025 = AI 7007: 250622250701

5. Measurements
Important: Measurement AIs always use a fixed 6-digit numeric field, zero-padded. The last digit of the 4-digit AI sets the decimal position.
Example: AI 3100 (0 decimals) = 000152 → 152 kg
Example: AI 3102 (2 decimals) = 000152 → 1.52 kg
“vmti” = variable measure trade item (the product itself is measured, not the logistics unit).

Width / Diameter
Common error to avoid: Several AI lists circulating online (including one major competitor’s published table) incorrectly reuse the Area AI family (3140-3145) for Width in inches. The correct AI family for Width/diameter in inches is 3240-3245. Always verify against GS1’s official numeric register before using an AI on printed packaging.

FAQ
What is a GS1 Application Identifier used for?
A GS1 Application Identifier tells a barcode scanner or Digital Link URI what type of data follows it, such as a batch number, expiration date, or net weight. Without the AI prefix, a scanner would see only a meaningless string of digits with no way to interpret it.
How many GS1 Application Identifiers are there?
GS1’s official register lists well over 100 defined AIs across categories including trade identification, dates, measurements, pricing, location, and personal data, and GS1 periodically adds new ones through its Global Standards Management Process. For the absolute latest additions, always check GS1’s live register at ref.gs1.org/ai.
Which AIs are most commonly used on product packaging?
For most consumer packaged goods, the core set is AI 01 (GTIN), AI 10 (batch/lot), AI 17 (expiration date), AI 21 (serial number), and AI 15 (best before date). These five cover the majority of Sunrise 2027 checkout and traceability use cases without needing the full extended list.
Can I use these AIs in a regular QR code, or do I need GS1 Digital Link?
Application Identifiers only carry meaning inside a GS1-128 barcode or a properly structured GS1 Digital Link URI. Putting raw AI-prefixed data into a plain static QR code without following the Digital Link URI syntax means retail 2D scanners and GS1-aware systems won’t be able to parse it correctly.
What happens if I use the wrong AI on printed packaging?
Since AIs are baked into the barcode itself, an incorrect AI cannot be fixed after printing. That’s why it pays to verify AI numbers against GS1’s official register before a print run, especially for imperial measurement AIs where errors are common (see our warning under Width/Diameter above).
Do I need a GS1 Company Prefix to use these AIs?
You need a GS1 Company Prefix to generate a valid GTIN (AI 01) and other GS1-assigned identifiers for retail sale. For internal tracking, warehouse use, or non-retail applications, some businesses use self-assigned numbers, but retail and Sunrise 2027 checkout compliance requires a properly licensed GS1 prefix from your local GS1 Member Organisation.
